Engineering Geophysics

Mineshaft Location

The survey of a former colliery site in South Wales involved the use of reconnaissance geophysical techniques to investigate the location of former structures and mineshafts.  The quadrature phase of the ground conductivity mapping provided information concerning former buildings, foundations and services while the inphase component measurements were used to locate a number of buried, capped mineshafts.

Service Location

The proposed refurbishment of a number of blocks of flats in London required the existing services to be accurately located to ensure that any excavations could be carried out safely.  A combination of methods including ground penetrating radar, electromagnetic service location devices and visual inspection were used to create service/utility location plans.

Sea Defence Studies

The adequacy of sea and river defence constructions is of major importance as has been illustrated by failures of such structures during violent storms in the recent past.  Ground penetrating radar is often utilised to investigate for shallow voiding within blockwork or concrete structures, caused by washout of the infill materials, which could result in structural collapse if left undetected.
